Thoughts on A Plague Tale: Requiem

"A Plague Tale: Requiem" boldly builds upon the strengths of its predecessor. It is a gruesome and emotionally taxing journey.

Set in an alternate history version of 14th century France during the Hundred Years' War, the game follows Amicia, the older sister of a troubled boy named Hugo. Together, they navigate a world filled with beauty and dystopia, facing a relentless tide of plague rats and treacherous encounters with dim-witted soldiers, all in a desperate bid to save Hugo.

Gameplay

Gameplay-wise, "Requiem" doesn't significantly depart from its predecessor but refines the existing formula effectively. The standard stealth action sequences offer familiar mechanics, with distractions, environmental hazards, and stealth takedowns. While not groundbreaking, these mechanics remain engaging. NPC allies who contribute their unique abilities add variety to the stealth gameplay, keeping it interesting.

Combat sections that eschew stealth and have you facing waves of enemies are less successful, as they feel out of place and somewhat awkward, given Amicia's limited combat capabilities.

Where "Requiem" truly shines is in its rat-centric gameplay. Rats are no longer just an environmental hazard; they are a terrifying force of nature capable of breaking through walls and engulfing entire cities. The puzzles involving rats, while visually impressive, are generally straightforward, but the moments when rats and soldiers coexist provide thrilling and creative challenges that blend stealth and puzzle-solving.

The game allows players to choose their playstyle, which affects character progression. Focusing on stealth, for instance, improves Amicia's abilities in that regard, while other styles emphasize different skills.

The gameplay alternates between competent but somewhat standard stealth action and memorable puzzle-based sequences where you must outwit and outmanoeuvre hordes of voracious rats. The best moments blend both elements, creating tension as you confront enemies amidst a sea of ravenous rodents.

Story

The game's story delves into the intricate mystery of Hugo's illness, introducing memorable characters along the way, some well-written and nuanced, others driven by madness. While the original "Plague Tale" was grim, its sequel takes nihilism to new depths, offering a relentlessly dark and pessimistic narrative. Despite the relentless hardships, Amicia, Hugo, and their companions retain a glimmer of hope and form heartwarming bonds, making for a compelling but emotionally exhausting journey for me.

The storytelling is a standout feature, filled with jaw-dropping moments. Amicia's character is resilient and irritable, and I am emotionally invested in defending her beloved brother Hugo.

Summary

"A Plague Tale: Requiem" is a remarkable sequel that amplifies the strengths of its predecessor. While it doesn't take significant risks with its gameplay mechanics, it delivers a compelling and emotionally charged story, outstanding visuals and audio, and unforgettable rat-filled sequences.
